Our company is a joinery specialist that has a reputation for the incredible craftsmanship we offer. We work tirelessly to design and make products that are suitable for every client. This includes bespoke timber doors among other things. Aside from being hand-made, they are incredibly secure and reassuringly heavy.
One thing to keep in mind with joinery is there is a wide array of different timbers to choose from. You will likely encounter both engineered and solid timber. This can lead to the question, what is the difference?
This type is actually three timber sheets rather than one single piece of wood. The middle sheet runs against the grain of the sheets that exists below and above it. By rotating the grain in this manner, you can stop the final material from swelling and moving. Furthermore, you can prevent it from warping and shrinking. This results in a piece of timber that is especially strong and stable.
You cut the timber here to get rid of any imperfections or knots in the wood. Usually, you do this with the assistance of a cutting machine. Following this, you join the pieces back together in an interlinked manner. You would refer to this as finger jointing. This also provides the timber with extra strength.
This is merely wood cut directly from the tree. Because of its natural condition, it still has those imperfections and knots you would expect. Some people love being able to see them in timber because it makes the pieces unique. This type of timber is also very durable.
Choosing the right type
Both types are green, environmentally friendly options to construct with. It is possible to recycle any waste and the doors themselves when they need replacing. In addition, growing trees removes carbon from the atmosphere. In other words, timber is carbon negative.
To decide whether to opt for solid or engineered, you need to think about the aesthetics. If you want a unique timber look, choose the former. On the other hand, if you prefer a uniform look with no knots or grain, the second is better for you. The layering with engineered can also offer more stability and protection against warping. This makes it good for wet environments.
