Wood is one of the very best materials in the world because it is so versatile. There are lots of different types and skilful craftsmen can use it to create all kinds of things. For example, you could choose bespoke timber windows, staircases, a wonderful kitchen, and various pieces of furniture. There are even people who build entire homes from wood.
If you do decide to go for wooden windows, you need to choose what style you want. There are two broad different types – sash and casement. However, there are different styles in each category.
The oldest style of sash window is cord hung. It dates all the way back to the 17th century. These windows have a lot of character and people still love them today. In fact, there are many buildings in the UK with original windows that are over 100 years old. The style gets its name from the fact that cords and weights are within the deep frame to allow the sashes to move vertically.
A newer style of sash window is known as spiral hung. This design is from the 1930s. The difference is the windows have springs rather than cords. As a result, the frames can be narrower. The sashes still open vertically though.
A third option is the Yorkshire sash window. The big difference here is that the sashes don’t open vertically; instead they slide horizontally. This is the rarest style of sash but it has a huge amount of personality.
This style of window has a solid frame and the casement will attach to it using a hinge. There are various configurations to choose from, including side and top hung. The difference is how they open. Casement windows are very popular because they are easy to use, improve ventilation, and create a strong, draught-proof seal when they are shut.
One of the most notable styles here is the French casement. The style is similar to French doors with the fact that it is two panes that can each open horizontally to create one large opening. People love this style for upper floors, especially when there are great views.
