Let’s face it, there are few of us who will go into a home renovation project without some kind of budget, but if you’re hoping to create the abode of your dreams without going over the top with your spending, there are a few things you can do.
ABC Money recently offered some advice to homeowners who are planning to undertake a renovation, giving recommendations on where you can save some cash, and where you should bring in the professionals.
One of the news provider’s top tips is to project manage things yourself, provided you are confident doing so. You need to be realistic about the time and effort this will take, but if you’re up for the challenge it could be a way to save some cash.
There are also a number of tasks that you can tackle yourself, again depending on your DIY abilities. Simple jobs like painting and tiling are worth doing, ensuring you have the money to spend on professionals for more complicated elements of the renovation like bespoke joinery in Sussex.
Another golden rule is to get multiple quotes for everything you’re going to hire trades people for. Consumer specialist Angie Hicks told the news provider that “you have to arm yourself with enough knowledge to make an educated hiring decision”.
Get recommendations from people you trust where possible, and always remember that cheap doesn’t necessarily equate to value for money.
Research published earlier this year revealed that 40 per cent of homeowners want to improve their abode rather than move to somewhere new, so this advice could be useful for a host of people around the UK, especially if they’ve never tackled a renovation project before.
